Maasai Women's Health & Resource Center
MCI is constructing the first women’s health and resource center in the Indoinyo Oloip area of the Maasai Mara game reserve. When completed in the Spring of 2010, the center will provide education relevant to the community’s social, political and cultural needs and promote local talents in areas such as computer literacy, beadwork, poetry, music, environmental conservation and leadership development. The center will utilize volunteer healthcare professionals and Internet technology to provide health information to community members, with a focus on women’s health. In addition, the center will provide the opportunity for women to share information and life skills in such areas as cooking, nutrition and health. As a long term objective, the center will work with medical professionals, NGOs and government agencies to provide culturally-sensitive women’s health and family planning services to local Maasai women.
To achieve these objectives, The Center will:
- Install a solar powered computer lab with Skype access, and conduct computer training workshops for women and other community members;
- Conduct life skills workshops on child development, environmental health, livestock husbandry, food and nutrition, and child development;
- Raise awareness on the importance of women’s education and empowerment;
- Provide adult education, life skills seminars, linkages between the community, NGOs, and government agencies, and become an information clearing house on important social, cultural, political and environmental issues affecting our community, particularly women;
- Provide space for women to do beadwork, sewing of school uniforms and entrepreneurial skills training;
- Provide uniforms for needy Maasai Children;
- Partner with international medical organizations, NGOs and government agencies to develop responsible and culturally-sensitive women’s health care services.
