Fred Baron Girls’ School
The Fred Baron Maasai Girls’ School is a private school funded and administered by MCI. Established in March 2008, the Baron School is located 30 kilometers on the northern-eastern side of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Southern Kenya. The school is named after the late Fred Baron, a Dallas attorney with a lifelong commitment to progressive causes. The only girls’ school of its kind in the area, it provides educational opportunities for 150 Maasai girls between the ages of 5 and 12. In addition to formal education, the school offers scholarships and food to its students.
When the school first opened, classes were conducted under a learning tree under the supervision of MCI founder Sekeyian Yiaile. From these modest beginnings, the school has grown to include six classrooms, a kitchen and two teachers’ cottages. Construction is currently underway on a seventh classroom, administrative office and computer lab. When completed in March 2010, the computer lab will have twelve solar-powered laptops and a satellite dish that will enable every student to access free educational materials from the Internet.
